The Rio+20 Summit took place in June 2012 in Río de Janeiro, marking 20 years since the first United Nations Conference on Environment and Development held in the same city in 1992, which gave life to Agenda 21 of the UN. Rio+20 had the objectives of renewing the political commitments with regards to sustainable development, assessing the progress to date and the gaps that still exist in the implementation of the outcomes from the main Summits on sustainable development, as well as addressing new and emerging challenges. There were two central themes to Río+20: the green economy in the context of sustainable development and the eradication of poverty and the institutional framework for sustainable development. More importantly Rio+20 was expected to define the new international political agenda on development.

Fundación TierraVida, together with other international youth organizations, lead the project “Road to Río+20” in order to influence the outcomes of the Conference, ensuring a strong and articulate youth participation both before, during and after Río+20. “Road to Río+20” aimed to inspire and mobilize youth to work towards sustainable development, linking, amplifying and promoting the initiatives that various youth organizations and groups are pursuing around this issue.
